Each cell in the body requires oxygen for energy. The use of energy produces free radicals. The body is generally able to control the free radicals that are produced and utilize them. However, a large production of free radicals is hard for the body to cope with. The injury of body tissue and molecular damage is caused by continued oxidative stress. Cigarettes and motor vehicles emit substances that gain entry into the human body when people breathe. The pollutant substances form free radicals.
The body’s immune system typically uses free radicals in the neutralization of bacteria and viruses. The instability of free radicals is caused by missing electrons. This makes it necessary for free radicals to connect themselves to the membranes of cells. They basically steal electrons from the cells and cause the death of those cells. When the cells die, the aging process is accelerated. Damage of the DNA of cells can cause cancer. The nutrients that curb oxidative damage are known as antioxidants.
Antioxidants cause the neutralization of free radicals by giving out one of their electrons and negating the need for electrons that the free radicals have. Tissue and cell damage is prevented by this action. When the antioxidant gives out an electron, this does not alter its structure. The body is protected from the damage of free radicals by Vitamin E and Vitamin C. Vitamin E helps to protect people from heart disease because it prevents the oxidization of bad cholesterol.
Vitamin C works by combating the formation of free radicals that results from cigarette smoke and pollution. The abundance of antioxidants in fruits and vegetables is well documented. Antioxidants are also available in other types of food such as grains, nuts, fish and poultry. Brightly colored fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants and it is important to consume them in large amounts. Ideally, fruits and vegetables should form an essential part of anyone’s diet. Vitamin C is found in various vegetables and fruits as well as poultry and beef. Mangoes, nuts and oils are good sources of Vitamin E.
