Feeling tired or restless occasionally is normal, owing to the daily demands of life. Chronic fatigue, on the other hand, is a medical condition that should be treated. Chronic fatigue can be caused by a number of factors and these include lack of sleep, excessive pain, depression, sedentary lifestyle, anxiety and stress. A constant lack of energy can also be caused by certain types of medication that induce drowsiness or fatigue.
Distinguishing fatigue from simply feeling tired is based on how often the low energy levels are experienced. Individuals who are wracked by the pain of arthritis conditions often feel tired because of their inability to get sufficient rest. The risk of fatigue is highest among people who have arthritis, are overweight or suffer from chronic diseases such as cancer. A quick visit to the doctor is not likely to deal with the problem of fatigue instantaneously.
Fatigue has a significant impact on people’s lives because it makes even the most basic daily tasks challenging. The extreme feeling of exhaustion is experienced after sleeping through the night. It makes it difficult to think properly or focus on anything substantial. Since the feeling of fatigue is constant, it can also wreck havoc on one’s emotions. It is possible to fight fatigue and it is always advisable to consult a doctor when fatigue becomes unbearable.
If fatigue is the result of a pain-related condition, it is important to make every effort to treat the condition itself. Once the condition is treated or managed, the pain will be reduced or eliminated. Inflammation should be controlled because it is a contributing factor to the lack of energy.
Medication such as painkillers and anti inflammatory drugs often induce drowsiness as a side effect and long terms use of the drugs can cause fatigue. In such cases, the problem usually goes away when one stops using the medication. Anemia is another common cause of lack of energy and it is usually the result of an iron deficiency. Taking steps to deal with anemia can go a long way in solving the problem of chronic fatigue.
